EV holiday in Croatia
Croatia is a popular destination for a driving holiday. The trip takes you through three countries, and in Croatia fast chargers are further apart than in northern Europe.
Getting there
You drive through Germany, Austria and Slovenia. You need a vignette in both Austria and Slovenia. The Slovenian e-vignette for cars costs €16 for a week, €32 for a month and €117.50 for a year. From Hamburg you can take a car train to Villach, close to Slovenia.
Charging networks
HEP, IONITY, Tesla, Petrol and ELEN have rapid chargers in Croatia. Chargers of 150 kW and above are mostly along a few main roads and around Zagreb, and many rapid chargers only deliver 50 kW. Have a plan B at every charging stop. See more in EV charging networks in Europe.
Tolls
The motorways have tolls. In 2026 you pay at the toll booth by card or cash. From 1 March 2027, payment becomes electronic without barriers.
Speed and rules
The limit is 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on country roads and 130 km/h on motorways. Drivers under 25 may drive at most 120 km/h on the motorway. From the last Sunday in October to the last Sunday in March, dipped headlights must be on day and night. You must carry spare bulbs unless the car has xenon or LED lights.
Slovenia on the way
In Slovenia the motorway limit is 130 km/h. From 15 November to 15 March, the car must have winter tyres, or you must carry snow chains.
At the campsite
Many Danes stay at campsites in Croatia. Read how to charge from the site's socket in campsites and holiday homes.
